We all have preferences when it comes to the type of project we keep returning to! For me, it’s a simple stitches you can easily memorize in bold color choices. As a former yarn dyer, color has always been at the center of my work and one of my favorite components of designing a piece. I believe that color is a major player in storytelling and bringing fabric to life.
In my brand new pattern the Sugar Plum Blanket, I knew that color was going to influence how I approached the piece. With striking neutrals against pastels and the use of high contrast white/black, this little blanket is deceivingly simple. The color does most of the heavy lifting in how complex the blanket may look but hiding behind color changes, lies an easy to memorize two row repeat.

To celebrate this wonderful holiday project, I took the time to look back on some of the color palettes that didnt make the final sample and color palettes that I daydreamed for future versions of this piece! Whether you are a neutral lover or brush your teeth with the rainbow, these palette options cater to all tastes in color. The best part? This incredible chunky/bulky base Hue and Me from Lion Brand Yarn and Alexi Tavel of Two of Wands. Each colourway includes such depth and range that the palette possibilities are truly endless. I had a hard time even narrowing it down to six palettes! So, without further ado, the palettes!

First up, we have the sample’s color palette: the Sugar Plum Palette! This was hand selected by the curator of Hue and Me yarn, Alexi Tavel (@twoofwands) and provides all the sensibility of a neutral option while sprinkling soft purple undertones in shades like Iris, Shadow, and Haze.

“I dont know when, I dont know how, but I know this blanket palette is popping off right nowwww” – The Little Knitting Mermaid (probably). Jokes aside, I am most definitely going to be using this Mermaid inspired palette filled with coral, rich ocean blues, and colorful nods to aquatic life and vegetation! It’s the perfect gift for the Mermaid loving child (or adult) in your life!

I am calling this little beauty, the Holiday Cheer palette! It’s bright, it’s classic, and is totally reminiscent of all the rich jewel tones we see through Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s! This palette gives you the perfect throw blanket for sipping hot cocoa under in front of the fireplace!

Love to daydream? I’ve got you covered. This pastel palette is everything we love about refracted rainbows and naps in the afternoon! It’s ethereal, gentle, and absolutely magical. Want an even more pastel vibe? Swap out your Artichoke colourway with additional skeins of Salt!

Not for the faint of heart, the Rainforest palette I put together is everything to love about a travel through any verdant landscape complete with pops of color like poison dart frogs and parrot wings! Using three shades of green as a base, this palette allows you to play with so many bright colors while still creating a luscious colorscape.

Last but certainly not least is the Neutral Palette. Think animal print, think coffee shop, think fresh pressed linen. This palette combines all of the gorgeous Hue and Me neutral shades and is the perfect palette when you want to gift something hand made but want to make sure it matches your recipient’s living room!
I hope you’ve loved exploring the endless options available in Lion Brand Yarn’s Hue and Me base. This blanket was such a joy to knit and I can’t wait to see your version of it! Make sure to tag me on Instagram @venusandthecrab to show off your color choices.
The Sugar Plum Throw is truly the new mood ring blanket in your life!
